Daya Dharma Bina Satkarma Nahi
(怀仁爱,行正义,才是功德的实例)

借追随以上两个原则,一个人可以问,‘是的,斯瓦米,但我怎么知道在正义之大道上,我是成功的?’

斯瓦米回答,

‘正义训练你,保持平静,保持冷静的头脑,保持牢靠的镇定。成功或失败,富裕或贫穷,喜悦或悲伤,天意或失望,它们的暂停即逝的本质是你所知道的。你不该得意也不该泄气。你应该心平气和,不为所动。任何协助你维持这自若的镇定的就是正义。’

体认世界乃一暂态现象可以帮助一个人不执著于成功或痛苦。

斯瓦米说了,

‘你不应该迷失于世界,渴望那无常的喜悦,无常的财富,无常的地位和奢华。只要你还活着,你可以享受到不期而遇的喜悦。只要你还持有某种肉身执着,你也会持有对一个地方或国家的执着。只要你还认为这由五大元素组成的世界是真实不虚的,你将一定会好好照顾也由五大元素组成的自己的肉身。但真的,你不应该浪费你的时间老是想着这些东西。你应该常常记得的是目标。’

职是之故,歌曲的这一行强烈敦促人去执行他正义的任务以达到完美的境界,然而,这样的一个角色的扮演不能视为真的正直行为。有些人非常刻板,以固定而狭窄的限制在外面做事。他们做出人们所期盼的好成绩,然而他们有一个弱点,就是不能忍受他人的不完美。这样的一个人会永远离不开恼怒与烦恼。当他们的怨愤与不满被听到时,他们的行为或许情有可原而过错也理应落在他人肩上,但重要的是,要注意到每一个人都是神的创造。每一个人都按照着自己的时间去步向开花结果的境界。每一个人正应付着他们自己的业力,而就我们而言,要把所有这一切都考虑在内。

是故,正义被用之于歌曲的这一行,已经示明一个人必须扮演各种不同的角色。例如,拿一个父亲或一个丈夫的角色来说吧!一个丈夫的角色意味着他必须应付妻子,而一个父亲的角色意味着他必须应付孩子。其实,人所扮演的所有角色必须与其他角色相关。是故,一个在相仿的人生舞台上扮演多种角色的人,需要与其他男女演员打交道,同时他也扮演不同的角色于不同的剧本之中。显然,生活的结构是建立在错综复杂的人类关系上,要把这些角色扮演得淋漓尽致,并予以谅解和爱,这就是为什么歌曲的这一行以Daya Dharma作为开始的原因。

斯瓦米说,

‘怜悯(daya)是最高的正义(Dharma)。一颗充满怜悯的心是神的庙宇。每一个人都应该怀持一颗充满怜悯的心。’

因此,正义角色,除非一个人以悲悯之心去扮演和执行,否则,不论它是多么正确或正直,都不能称之为‘Sat Karma ’-- 把真的行为果报带来。这劝导可谓极其及时-- 因为斯瓦米说,

‘这是‘Kala’的时代,人们经常称之为‘Kalaha Yuga’,不协调的时代,在其间,夫妻之间、父子之间、师徒之间,误解频繁,纠纷不断。要放弃动辄争吵的习性,人们必须培育爱与怜悯并以爱的化身去照亮世界,其实,他们确实是爱的化身。心被称为‘Hradaya’,有‘Daya’(怜悯)在于其内。只有在人对他人怀持悲悯或‘daya’之时,才配称作‘人’。’

在这现代化的年代或时期里,人们寻找他人的缺点甚于他们自己的缺点。有人,在找到他人的过失的当儿,不断以负面之词去谴责和羞辱他人。我们必须认识,我们的目的务必是去纠正而不是去谴责。纠正一个人,责备一个犯错者等等,它可能是正义的。一个赛中心或一个公司的主席也许会觉得那是他的正义行为,身为领导的他有义务去责备、惩罚或开除犯错者。但如果那惩罚的行为不注入悲悯 -- 也就是怀持动机去治疗、去纠正、去协助、去改进而不是去羞辱,那么,那行动便失去Daya, Dharma的品质,因此而失去‘Satkarma’的力量!这样的感觉只能出自一颗浸濡于悲悯的心。斯瓦米一再地强调悲悯的爱的重要性。

关于为什么只有人类才能得道。‘爱是支配性的原因。悲悯的爱是纯爱,毫无私心。在动物世界里也有爱,但混了欲在内。然而悲悯是纯爱。只有人持有悲悯。通过爱,他或可认知和体现生命的一体性,而这样,借爱,他会与神融合为一。’

更高境界的体认与体现,只能通过悲悯的爱才得以成就。值得注意的是,大师们和先知们斗展示了这美妙的本质。吸引人去推测的是,当意识在演进而将要与高级意识合一时,也许这样的一个爱更加容易地散发悲悯。

一个悲悯者如何在世上生活?

斯瓦米说,

‘一个促进另一人的喜悦的人,其所获得的喜悦是无可媲比的。当你看到另一个人受苦时,你的心必须溶化于悲悯之中。那是纯质个体的标志。翳质个体就见若无睹,无动于衷;他太迟钝,太呆头呆脑以致不受影响。激质的人则急于惩罚始作俑者,并可能忘记了为受害者缓解痛苦。麻木不仁是世界各地损害人之神性的一切残酷的根源。’

斯瓦米不仅回答所有问题,并且说明各个不同类型的反应,胥视个人情绪与性情而定。这首歌在给求道者建议四大瑜珈修习之后,它传授最崇高和最高尚的方式去生活于这世界上。难怪斯瓦米说,

‘那个其心充满悲悯,其言浸濡于爱而其身用于服务人群的人,不因恶势力而动容,也不受伽利(Kali)期的不利影响。’

导师所提供的这样的一个保证,鼓励我们继续去力求完美。爬山者几乎抵达高峰。寒冷的风不断地迎着他的脸吹来。纵使疲惫的肌肉和沉重的行李把他给拉住,然而凭借十足的勇气和决心去攀登顶峰,他还是提起劲,紧紧地跟随他的向导。向导正向前跋涉。他紧密地观察向导的步伐、向导避开的途径、向导手撑之处、向导身体倚靠的边沿。紧密的观察,在所必需,因为他感到自己费尽幸苦,千里至此,他不应该犯任何错误。沿着弯曲的路径,而现在出现一个转折。最后的一步。已经达到顶峰的向导往下伸出双手。爬山者握稳他的双手,做出最后的冲刺,爬山者的身体被推向前,着陆于顶峰的尖端。他止步一会儿以歇口气。。。而当他恢复平衡时,他慢慢地欣赏风景。远方的山峦绵延起伏,消失于空无之中。想象他站在山峰。。。顶端。。。主创造的顶峰:他感到自己完全沉浸于向四周扩大而成其浩瀚的无边且澄清的蓝天。清凉的、舒畅的空气迎面奔涌,刷去他早些时候所感到的慵懒和疲惫。没有字眼可以表达。。。没有感觉可以理智化。。。没有体验可以比拟。。。当泪水不禁滚下时,他模糊的视线捕捉到向导的脸,那位以其不断的鼓励来给予激励、传授、指导、一再保证,及驱除疲乏的向导。此时,无言可以表白,只有浸泡着感恩的泪水及一颗充斥着爱的心,歌曲贯彻字里行间。。 。。。

By following the above two principles one can ask `Yes, Swami but how am I to know that I am succeeding on the Dharmic path?’

Swami replies,

`Dharma trains you to be calm, level-headed, secure in equanimity. You know the transitory nature of success or failure, riches or poverty, joy or grief, appointment or disappointment. You are not elated or deflated. You are serene, unmoved. Anything that helps you to maintain this unruffled stability is Dharma.’

To realise that the world is a transient stage, helps one not to get attached to success or sorrow.

Swami has said,

‘You should not get lost in the world aspiring for impermanent joys, impermanent wealth, impermanent position and luxuries. So long as you are alive you can enjoy the joys which come your way. So long as you still have some body attachment, you will also have some attachment to a place or country. So long as you still consider this world made up of the five elements as real, you will have to take care of your body which also consists of these five elements. But truly you should not waste your time dwelling on these things. You should always remember the goal.’

Hence this line in the song urges man to execute his Dharmic roles to perfection and yet such a role played or enacted cannot be considered true righteous action. There are people extremely regimented and working in the world outside with tight and confined boundaries. They excellently pour out into the world results expected of them by others but their one weakness is that they cannot tolerate imperfections in others. Such an individual will forever be irritated and upset. When their grievance is heard their actions may be justifiable and the blame rightly should fall on others but it is important to note that everyone is God’s creation. Each one takes their own time to bloom. Each one is coping with their own karmic forces and it is important for us to take all this into consideration.

Hence the fact that the Dharma is used in this line already indicates the various roles one has to take. For example let us take the role of a father or a husband. The role of a husband must mean that the role deals with his wife while the role of a father must mean that it is with reference to his child. In fact all roles man takes must be with reference to other roles. Hence an individual plays multiple roles in life similar to a stage show where the actor relates and inter-relates with all other actors and actresses, and also plays different roles in different plays. Obviously the woof and warp of living is the intricate matrix of human relationship which demand not only that the roles be played to excellence but also with understanding and love which is why the line in the song begins with Daya Dharma.

Swami says,

‘Compassion (daya) is the highest Dharma. A heart filled with compassion is the temple of the divine. Every man should have a compassion-filled heart.’

Therefore the Dharmic roles unless one executes it with compassion however right or righteous cannot be termed `Sat Karma’-i.e. bring forth the true consequence of the actions. The advice is extremely timely - for Swami says, `This is the age of `Kala’ which is often described as `Kalaha’ Yuga, the age of discord in which there will be misunderstanding and quarrels between husband and wife, father and son, preceptor and disciple. Giving up the quarrelsome attitude, people must cultivate love and compassion and shine as embodiments of love which they really are. The heart is termed as `Hradaya’ in which `Daya’ (compassion) is in built. Only when one has `daya’ or compassion towards others, can it be deemed fit to be called a human being.’

In this modern age and time, people search for faults more in others than in themselves. There are people, upon finding the fault in others, continue to condemn and humiliate with negativity. We must come to realise that our purpose must be to correct and not to condemn. It may be Dharmic to correct a person, to scold the wrong doer etc. The President of a Sai Centre or a company may feel he is doing his Dharma as a leader to scold, punish or sack someone for wrong doing. But if that act of punishment is not infused with compassion-i.e. the motive to heal, to correct, to help, to improve and not to humiliate, then that action losses the quality of Daya, Dharma and thus losses the power of `Satkarma’! Such feelings can only be generated from a heart soaked in compassion. Swami has again and again stressed on the importance of compassionate love.

Regarding why only human beings may become realised. ‘Love is the dominant reason. Compassionate love is pure love, unselfish. In the animal there is love, but it is mixed with lust. But compassion is pure love. Only man has compassion. Through love he may realise the oneness of life, and in this way, by love, he will be one with God’.

The realisation of the higher can only be achieved through compassionate love. It is interesting to note that Great Masters and Prophets showed this beautiful nature. It is tempting to speculate that when consciousness is evolving and is about to merge with the super consciousness perhaps such a love radiates compassion more readily.

How does a compassionate one live in this world?

Swami says,

‘The joy one gets while promoting another’s joy is incomparable. Your heart must melt in compassion when the eyes see another person suffering. That is the sign of Satvik individual. The Tamsic individual will be indifferent, he is too dull, too bovine, to be affected. The rajasic man will rush to punish the person who caused the suffering and might forget to relieve the misery of the person affected. Callousness is the root cause of all the cruelty that defaces the Divine nature of man, in all lands on the earth.’

Swami not only answers the question but states different type of responses depending upon individual’s mood and temperament. It is indeed beautiful that the song after suggesting the four Yoga practises for the seeker, reaches a point where it imparts the highest and most noble way to live in this world. No wonder Swami said,

‘The one whose heart is full of compassion, whose words are steeped in love and whose body is used in the service of fellow men is neither affected by evil powers, nor by the adverse influence of the age of Kali.’

Such an assurance by the teacher motivates us to continue our struggle to perfection. The mountain climber almost reaches the peak. The cold wind continues to blow against his face. The tired muscles and the heavy luggage pull him down yet by sheer grit and determination to reach the pinnacle he heaves himself forward closely following his guide. The guide is already trekking forward. He watches closely the steps his guide takes, the path he avoids, the places he puts his hands for support, the edges where his body rests. The scrutiny is close for he feels at this point after coming all the way; he should not make a mistake. The path curves and now a twist. The final step. The guide who has reached the peak lowers his hands. The climber holding steadily the hands gives a final push and the climber’s body is thrust forward only to land on the sharp edge of the peak. He stops for a while to catch a breath ……and while gaining his balance slowly views the scenery. Distant away the hills keep rolling on and on and disappear into nothingness. To imagine that he is at the peak ….the tops…the pinnacle of God’s creation: he feels completely absorbed into the infinite clear blue sky that spread all around into its vastness. The cool, comforting air rushing forward, brushing away the lethargy and the weariness he was earlier feeling. No words to express…no feelings to intellectualise…no experience to equate …As tears roll down, his blurred vision captures the face of his guide who motivated, instructed, guided, provided the reassurance, and removed the fatigue by his constant encouragement. With no words to utter, and tears soaked in gratitude and a heart choked with Love, the song reaches the line ...
