Guru Seva Bina Nirvana Nahi

它会促进Chitta Shuddhi(纯净意识)。’

Hari Bhajan Bina...Spiritual Tips to climb the mountain of life

Guru Seva Bina Nirvana Nahi

Swami in one his speeches clarifies,

‘But do not believe that you can by means of Seva (service) reform or reshape the world. You may or you may not. That does not matter. The real value of Seva, its most visible result, is that it reforms you, reshapes you. Do Seva as Sadhana then you will be humble and happy.’

The reshaping and reforming of human personality is only through the liquidation of ego through the rendering of service to fellowmen.

Swami says,

‘Service to man will help your divinity to blossom, for it will gladden your heart and make you feel that life has been worthwhile. Service to man is service to God, for God is in every man, every living being and in every stone and stump.’

The importance of Seva or service was further elaborated when Swami said that

‘Through Seva you realise that all beings are waves of ocean of divinity. No other Sadhana can bring you into the incessant contemplation of the oneness of all living beings. You feel another’s pain as your own; you share another’s success as your own. To see everyone else as yourself and yourself in every one, that is the core of Sadhana of Seva. Again Seva makes the ego languish. It makes you humble before the suffering of others and when you rush to render help, you do not calculate how high or low his social or economic status is. The hardest heart is slowly softened into the softness of butter, by the opportunity that the Seva dal offers. Seva is prescribed as one among the nine steps towards realisation.’

The seeker at this point may want to clarify `Swami, to come out and participate in service activities needs time. Time is what I do not have.

Swami replies,

‘The most important thing is that one cannot find anything greater than service to the world. We have to dedicate our lives for service. A person who does not render service is not a human being. He is worse than a beast. We should never give up service. Service is our life breath. Service is our life. Service is our goal.’

The fourth line in the song clearly points out that service is necessary and is one of the techniques in bringing the mind to a more serene and quiet mood. However we must again be careful. While service has the ability to turn the ego inwards it is quite clear that the ego is still not totally eliminated. There are many who do great help and sacrifice but even such people will have to be reborn to enjoy a better life as a result of the accumulation of good merits. So instead of being caged behind iron bars we will be caged behind bars made by gold. But caged us will be ……The story of Karna illustrates the point well:

‘Karna, the war hero of the Mahabharat due to circumstances joined the Kaurava forces to fight the Pandavas. He had a noble and good heart. He sacrificed everything he had and was prepared to give up whatever he possessed. The only weakness he had was his attachment to Duroydhan, the eldest brother of the Kaurava clan.

So noble and virtuous was the war hero that Lord Krishna himself appeared when Karna was on his death bed with arrows in his body. The great Lord who appeared in a disguise asked Karna if he could give him something. Karna replied that at this last moment of life where he had nothing what possibly could he give …but even then he said `Yes, ask and I will give’ Lord Krishna asked Karna to give all the accumulated merits he had earned in his lifetime due to the sacrifices he had made. Karna agreed and Lord Krishna then removed his disguise and showed him his real self. Karna gave as he promised and the good Lord sends Karna’s eternal soul to be one of the celestial stars in the heavens above.’

The story is a classic demonstration that mere service and sacrifice cannot liberate one for he is still bound by the karmic merits he has acquired. The teacher in this song is so scientific in its instruction and so precise and complete in the technique, reminds us to dedicate all actions to one’s guru or teacher….which is why the line in the song does not begin with Seva but Guru Seva.

Swami says,

‘When the work is offered to God, it gets sanctified into puja. This makes it free from ego. It is also freed from the earthly desire for success and the earthly fear of failure. You feel that you have done the work as best as you can, your puja is accomplished. It is then for Him who has accepted the puja to confer on you what He considers best. This attitude will make the work nish-karma or niswarth or selfless service. Regular practise of this discipline will render the consciousness clean and pure. It will promote Chitta Shuddhi pure consciousness.’

Swami emphasised further the purpose of service itself,

‘The purpose of life is to grow in love, expand that love and to merge with God who is Love, and this is best done through service. There is no discipline equal to service for the eradication of the ego.’

The fourth line in the song indicates that if the seeker, acting in the world, acts purely to please the teacher or the Guru, he becomes a messenger living the instructions of his Master. He acts only as a result of the Master’s prompting. He lives the Master’s message. Such an individual loses his fascination for personal wants and gains. Like an ambassador to a country the seeker now has a new identity, a fresh outlook and greater zeal and enthusiasm to face all problems. He sees every obstacle as an opportunity to serve his teacher. He sees every hurdle as a challenge to realise his own potential.

The mountain climber if purely trekking through the difficult terrain and steep portions of the journey does it for just an inner personal satisfaction; he may soon come to a stop. Panting and sweating, he slowly wipes his endless sweat and may at many points in his journey think of returning home to the tempting call of the comfortable sofa and some hot meal. But if the climber is representing his state or even his nation, knowing that the conquering of the peak will bring satisfaction and happiness to the millions he represent, surely the climb up to regions where even oxygen will be lacking will become more challenging and gratifying. To transplant ego motivated by pure selfish living, to causes nobler and higher is a technique to inject inspiration into work. If this is true how more inspired will man be if he works for his Master and God and truly be an effective messenger of Peace and Love. The music through the flute is only possible because the instrument is hollow. Similarly the hollower we are, greater is the feeling of His music through us to the world around.

The first verse introduces the techniques of singing devotional songs, chanting the Lords name, performing selfless service and dedicating all actions to the Lord as means of integrating personality. Swami has always mentioned that unless the 3 H, which means Head, Heart and Hands are integrated, life cannot be experienced in full. The first verse, like the car mechanic takes part by part the key components of the human personality to oil and polish so that when placed back they will work in unison without friction.

The head clustered with confused ideas and contorted views of life and living is made to recite Gods name or Hari Naam. Slowly the agitated mind becomes still. Contemplation on Gods attributes and qualities slowly brings to the mind a goal worthy enough to be pursued.

The heart is instructed to burst forth and sing song of devotions. The feelings and emotions for the higher and nobler sentiments are slowly encouraged to be cultivated through devotional singing or Bhajans.

The hands are inspired to extend help and service to the sick and needy. The excessive energy man possess is curtailed and curbed, with the flow directed towards relieving the pain and suffering of others. Dedicating all actions to the Guru man is asked to live making Seva his breath.

The integration of head, heart and hands is the beginning of the blossoming of human personality. Swami in all his speeches has often said `Prem Swaroopa’ or embodiments of Love…..The integration of the 3 H as shown by the first verse will be the initial step towards recognising and realising that we are Prem itself.
