哈尔达米(J.B.S.

THE INDWELLER

My humble pranams at the lotus feet of our beloved Bhagavan Baba.

Dear brothers and sisters,

The topic given to me this evening for my talk is ‘The Indweller’. Let us go deep into the subject. All ills of this world such as differences, contradictions, conflicts are because of the fact that we have ignored the ‘Indweller’ in each and every one of us who is the same divine. Why then, do we not know this reality? In the course of discussion to follow we will also realize that the awareness of the ‘Indweller’ is the only solution to the present day problems of the trouble-torn society.

We often come across people who lack the spirit of appreciation. They even pass discouraging comments and try to pull down a person who is creative, innovative and constructive in his chosen field of work. In other words, such people kill others psychologically. Such an attitude damages society individually and collectively. Perhaps those that have come up very well and won the admiration of many at a different and distant land, would have done much better here, had they been encouraged and supported. A timely recognition, a pat on the back, a word of encouragement would have prevented many youngsters who leave the country as they have no incentives, prospects for advancement and not even appreciation. This amounts to psychological violence. So, they feel frustrated, disappointed, dejected and neglected. This way a scientist, a statesman, a writer, a musician, an artist, a researcher may find himself lost.

Everyone of us should first try to see good in others, find merit in others, admire the God-given talents in others and learn to share other’s joy and happiness. Let us be lavish in praise and sparing in blame. This is the first step towards our journey to the ‘Indweller’. So long we suffer from superiority or inferiority complex mentally, and as long as we are egoistic, self-centred and proud, it is impossible to know and experience the ‘Indweller’ for life time, no matter whatever spiritual path we may follow. This sort of psychological weakness blinds everyone, and so he or she cannot recognise, appreciate, acknowledge outstanding talent or merit in others.

Hara Gobind Khurana was awarded the noble prize when he settled and did research in U.S.A., while he spent his earlier period of life here in India, none cared to know about his work, leave alone appreciate and support. J.B.S. Haldame’s life tells us how sincere we should be. We recognized the greatness of Mother Teresa only after the whole world acclaimed her. There are many examples of this kind. As a nation we lose many experts and as an individual we lose the insight needed to experience the ‘Indweller’, with this psychic temperament and negative attitude. Bhagavan Baba tells us repeatedly, “Seek out your own faults and others’ merits.” He repeatedly reminds that “One has to be judged by the merits and not faults”. Body attachment, utter selfishness, excessive desires, exaggerated estimation of one’s own abilities and capacities, desire to avoid and detest even healthy competition, meaningless rivalry etc., may be some of the reasons for the absence of spirit of appreciation. We should not hurt anyone with our words, thoughts and deeds, because the ‘Indweller’ in everyone is God Himself.

Bhagavan remarks that no woman bears the name of Kaikeyi (stepmother of Lord Rama) as her weakness to listen to her servant’s words led to the death of King Dasaratha and the exile of Rama. Similarly, Manthara is known for speaking ill of others. Her words spoiled the mind of Kaikeyi. Therefore, no woman bears the name of Manthara. No man would like to be called Duryodhana. Why? He is known for his wicked thoughts, envy and evil designs. So also the character of Keechaka known for bad looks, which ruined him and put him to death in the hands of Bhima. Therefore bad hearing, bad looks, bad thoughts not only spoil the career and the good name of a person, but will also take him far away from the ‘Indweller’. They are the blocks, the speed breakers, hindrances for us to look into ourselves to turn inward and experience the ‘Indweller’. These tendencies ruin any person psychologically. Most often one who commits murder will be sentenced to death or hanged. This is only the punishment for the body. But in fact it is the evil mind which is the root cause of the crime that is to be punished. Unless the mind prompts, no one perpetrates any evil deed. We have courts and laws to punish the body which merely acts prompted by the mind. You can arrest a person physically, you cannot arrest his thoughts.

We are also under the false impression that by fasting on certain auspicious and sacred days we become spiritual and it is a sort of Sadhana. No, not at all. Some times when we travel long distances we skip food. We cannot call it Sadhana. The mind should fast or starve by not entertaining any worldly thoughts if it is to be spiritual Sadhana. Shirdi Sai Baba never encouraged anybody to fast. The significance of fasting is to be with God, the ‘Indweller’. According to Bhagavan Baba, “Fasting is to be exercised with respect to the senses and not the body.”

We now understand that it is the mind which is outward, responsible for the ignorance of the actual ‘Indweller’ in everyone of us. It is also clear to us now that the mind instead of enjoying the blissful, non-dual, eternal state of the ‘Indweller’, is behaving as the killer of the initiative in the spirit of others. The mind traversing outward is the killer of one’s own happiness and dynamism as well as the enthusiasm of any other person with whom one mingles. We should be ever vigilant and cautious of this ‘Killer mind’, which is outward, dual, desire-oriented, ego-centred and materialistic. This ‘Killer mind’ like a pendulum moves to one end of pride pomp and exhibitionism, when a person is successful in ventures, wins, glory or gains reputation, triumphs in undertakings and earns encomiums. In times of failure or loss or defeat or censure, the ‘Killer mind’ pendulum moves to the other end of difference, dejection and depression. Such a mind I feel may be termed as the ‘Killer mind’.

Now let us dwell on the second aspect of the mind and call it ‘Thriller mind’, the first being the ‘Killer mind’. Bhagavan refers to nature in His Divine discourses, “Who painted the beak of the parrot red, fixed to the green body? What a beautiful contrast it is! Who painted beautifully the feathers of the peacock? How is it the running brooks flow forth with sounds of music? Why should the wind blow for all the living to breathe and be sustained? How is it that the stars glitter at night and hide during the day? Who made day and night in the creation? Under whose command these things happen in unfailing precision and regularity?” Have we ever marvelled at the solar system, lunar system and the galaxy, milky way of stars? Did we ever think of the eternal infinite five elements that maintain this organic world? How does the digestion and assimilation of food partaken take place in the body? While the fire burns everything that comes into contact with it, why it does not burn ashes, though it is of the very same wood?

We know that water has hydrogen and oxygen as components. Who combined both? How is it that planets do not collide in the planetary system? Who invited the honeybee from a distance to drink the nectar of a flower? At whose instance and will this circle of birth and death take place? Who has bestowed the inner light so as to see the outer light through the physical naked eye? Is it not a fact that the blind have eyes that cannot see, as the inner light is missing? The ears turn deaf if the inner sound is absent. So also the skin cannot feel the sense of touch. All the five elements are in you as in the outer, which are felt, expressed and experienced by the five senses. So, “you are the light, you are the sound, you are the heat, you are the magnet, you are the generator, you are the computer”, says Bhagavan Baba.

When we listen to the singing of the cuckoo, watch the morning dew on the leaves, observe mist during the twilight on a lake against the background of mountains full of huge trees, slopes and valleys, cast a glance at the smile of an innocent child, are we not thrilled? Does not our mind marvel, at the scenario? It definitely does. Such a sensitive, responsive and receptive mind is termed as the ‘Thriller mind’. Imagine the state of your mind when Bhagavan stands in front of you during one of the morning darshans, when you have been praying for long. Think of the reaction of your mind when you are called for an interview by Bhagavan during the critical moments of life when you need Him very much. Needless to mention that you will be thrilled, or your mind will be thrilled. This is what I mean by the ‘Thriller mind’.

Before the dusk as the white birds fly high across the blue sky, flowers and leaves toss as if they are dancing by the touch of the cool breeze, the mind is thrilled in response to these pleasant scenes of nature. Similar is the state when we visit any pilgrim centre, places of fine arts and so on. The ‘Thriller mind’ is above the ‘Killer mind’, mentioned earlier. The former elevates you to sublime heights, while the latter will pull you down deeper and deeper. Therefore one must travel from the first step ‘Killer mind’ to the next ‘Thriller mind’ level.

The third is automatically and naturally attained. It is ever abiding, vibrant, radiant, self-effulgent ‘Indweller’. Having been thrilled at the nature and its own life pattern at different levels physical, psychological, mental and intellectual, man turns his mind inward. He goes to the very source which makes his body work, mind think, life sustain and senses operate. This in spiritual parlance is called ‘mimamsa’ or Self enquiry. In the first state of ‘Killer mind’ the mind is very active absolutely dualistic, possessive, external, sensual and world-based. But in the second state, the ‘Thriller mind’ is positive, investigating, joyful, exciting and thrilling. It tries to dive deep and explore, thrilled completely by the inexplicable, not understandable, mysterious and enthralling universe around him in which he is an integral part and an integrated unit. He starts wondering how magnificent and mighty must the creator be, being the master designer of this Universe. He tries to follow and adapt different religious rituals and spiritual pursuits. Ultimately he will know that there is no alternative left for him to find an answer to his eternal quest other than to turn his mind inward.

Bhagavan Baba says that this is Self-enquiry, which is spirituality in the true sense. All the rest of the practices such as yagnas, yagas, penance, meditation, worship, etc., are holy and sacred activities to purify the mind and spend time usefully, but in no way are they spiritual.

In the ‘Nivritti marga’ (inward path), mind turned inwards leads to the awareness of the Self, and all the instruments of the individual, body, mind, and intellect are minimal and negligible. Very soon the seeker comes to know that the “ultimate reality” is the ‘Indweller’ whom he wants to experience and that all the instruments he is gifted with like body, mind, senses and intellect function only if the ‘Indweller’ dwells within. He is sivam or the auspicious so long as the ‘Indweller’ operates, monitors and functions from within. Deprived of the ‘Indweller’, is just a savam or dead body. So the ‘Indweller’ is the undercurrent, life principle though unseen, hidden, latent and inherent. A drop in the ocean gets itself lost. Sugar in combination with water loses its name and form.

For example, we have a silver tumbler in front of us, if we concentrate on the silver, we do not see the tumbler there. If we are mindful of the wood, we do not see the table which is made of wood. In a garland if you are particular of the thread that runs through all the flowers, the colour, form, and the fragrance of the flowers fall into insignificance. So also, applying the same principle here, awareness of the ‘Indweller’ as the sole motivating force that propels, vibrates and directs every activity in our life, will then make the ‘Indweller’ as the centre of attraction and deep concentration, and no longer the body, mind and intellect.

Though killer, thriller and the ‘Indweller’ outwardly seem to be different and contradictory, in reality they are not so. They are complementary and are the three steps, one supporting and leading to the other. Killer mind represents dualism, thriller mind signifies qualified non-dualism, while the ‘Indweller’ stands for non-dualism. The killer mind is the state with the traits of ‘Thamo Guna’, the thriller mind is the projection of ‘Rajo Guna’, while the ‘Indweller’ is ‘Satwic’ who is pure, unsullied, unpolluted, stable, changeless, eternal, and immortal truth. ‘Indweller’ is beyond gunas; i.e., gunaatheetha. The ‘Indweller’ is the ultimate reality and pure consciousness. It is full or total bliss. Realisation or awareness of this reality of the existence of the ‘Indweller’ who is one and the same divine, if realized; there will be no more restlessness or disturbance or agitation, but there will be an abiding peace, tranquillity, wisdom, and bliss.
